Merlin was originally Myrddin and Myrddin is a character that is center stage in a book penned by Geoffrey of Monmouth. That book is entitled "Historia Regnum Brittanie" which translates to "The History of Britain Kings. Geoffrey the Monmouth wrote this book in the 12th Century BCE.

King Arthur is the legendary character who went on to fight battles alongside his Knights of the Round Table. Arthur was the son of Uther Pendragon and Igraine. Igraine however was married to another royal and Arthur's birth is somehow credited to the mystical and magical intervention of Merlin. Uther Pendragon was the son of Constantine who many consider to be the last Emporer of Rome. Now Merlin was advisor to Uther while He was King of Britain. The meeting between Uther and Igraine(wife of Duke Gorlois of Cornwall) came about when Uther threw a battle victory celebration. The Gorlois were guests at the gala. Uther was instantly love struck by Igraine and this later set up a war between Gorlois and Pendragon. During this war Merlin magically shapeshifted Pendragon to look like Gorlois which allowed Uther Pendragon to seduce Igraine while her husband was away. This mystical union produced Arthur.
In a later battle Pendagron was poisoned and Arthur inherited the kingdom of Britain and it's throne.

This is the power that possesed Merlin. Merlin was not only an advisor and tutor to Royalty, he was a sorcerer and a prophet and a wizard. He was a shaman, and a keeper of closele guarded secrecies. Though Merlin's bloodline his hazy, it is thought that he might be the son of a Nun who was empregnated by a devil or an incubus.

Merlin: Son of the Devil; Servant of God.

As stated before the legend most know today of Merlin the Wizard are rooted in the characters of the stories surrounding King Arthur. This is only the surface of Merlin. He started prophesying when he was a young boy. Merlin stated at some point that his name was Ambrosius (Emrys in Welsh). He had so impressed the Royal King of his youth (King Vortigern) a castle was erected and given the name "Dinas Emrys" or Fort Ambrosius.

There is much more to the Prophecies of Merlin the Magician. Some of these prophecies may just be coming of age.
