A Zocalo is a central town square and can be found in many Mexican urban centers. The Aztec Sunstone was situated under the town square in Mexico City.
What was the Sun Stone; a calendar, or maybe a sacrificial alter of some sort?
The Aztec had a variety of myths to explain the Universe and the creation of life. The sun stone seems to point to a mythical version that is common amonst other Meso American civilisation of harmony through four cardinal points or four directions. There are four square panels on the Aztec basalt stone. In the center of the Sun Stone there is a carved image of the Sun God Tonatiuh. The square panels are adorned with symbols representing cosmic events as understood by the enlightened masters of the Aztecs in pre Columbian Meso america. In the lore of these people there was wisdom to be had in understanding the four direction represented on the stone. The four direction is but one such myth of creation. Another Aztec myth explained creation in a three layered vertical form where God ruled the heavens above the Earth ( Tlaltipac) and under the Earth there exists an intra-world.
These various concepts just add to the mystical value of this monolithic modern piece of art.
It is doubtful that even the most scholarly experts could determine with absolute certainty the exact meaning of all of the symbols on the stone.
So your guess is as good as mine as to the meaning of the themes in the squares; the Jaguar, then wind, the storms, the water.
On the outer edge of the centric stone there are 20 symbols. It is possible that these symbols represent the Aztec month which was equal to 20 days.
Much research has been done in an attempt to interpret the Sun Stone as a Cosmic Calendar. The true meanings remain as mysterious and enigmatic has the meanings of any oracle.

Xochicalco was the place where they handled time.
Here was the place where the great wise ones from the tribes to the north to the tribes to the south, mathematicians, astrologers, astronomers, came to adjust the calendars.
From here the best and most exact calendar in the world comes out known worldwide as the Aztec Calendar.
The Calendar in the Center has a face.
It has a tongue that is coming out which is a mathematical concept that works in combination with the eyes and the mouth to mark the year where the fifth sun began.
It's like a drug (hallucinogen) that shows us, tells us that the age we are living in now is going to end up with earthquakes.
That is what it is telling us.
There are researchers that assure us that now we are in the Sixth Sun.
According with the mathematical numbers, (i say) not yet.
There are prophecies of the Mayans from 2012 on (that show) when the Sixth Sun will begin.
In our Nahuatl counting (system, these dates) coincide.
It is how our grandparents wrote the story of the fifth sun up to 2012.
From 2012 on, some things are happening ahead of time, global warming, extinction of animals, lack of respect, wars.
Some of these things are coming ahead of time, but the Sixth Sun is coming.
It is not written down how it is going to be.
The grandparents footprints went up to 2012 and that is where the footprints of the grandparents end.
Now the responsibility is ours.
The responsibility for the Sixth Sun.
The rebirth of the sacred, respect to mother Earth, respect to everything that is alive, we need to rebuild it ourselves, so we have heavy duty word to do.
