In the Book of Revelation, which is the last of the 66 books that form the Christian sacred text called the Bible, the lake of fire is the destiny of the antichrist, the devil, and the unrighteous.
The prophet Daniel is channeling these messages through the ultimate source which is the voice of God, or the omniscient, omnipotent energy of all (or maybe one of his elect overlords, or heavenly angels). He goes on to record much of this and these words are later translated into other languages as interpreted by priests and scholars.
The lake of fire is mentioned in Revelation 19.20, Revelation 20.10, and Revelation 20.14 and Revelation 20.15. Some translations use the word brimstone or sulfur as an adjective to describe the lake.
Revelation 19.20
And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast - miracles that deceived all who accepted the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue. Both the beast and his false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of fire. (fiery lake of burning sulfur).
Revelation 20.10
Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the sulfuric lake of fire, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night, forever and ever.
Revelation 20.14
Then death and the grave were thrown in the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.
Revelation 20.15
And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
The armegeddon mindset within the believers of Bible prophecy is growing increasingly focused on these apocalyptic warnings. There have been several doomsday religious cults over the centuries since the oracle spoke these words of prophecy, yet some ingredient was always missing and these cults either faded out of memory or died away (no pun intended).
Past cults were usually quickly marginalized by secular society but today it's different. The number of religious leaders and secular leaders who are warning of global catastrophies of apocalyptic scale is growing, and worst they are agreeing that the end may be near. This correlation of beliefs empowers several new and potentially deceived and dangerous minor and major religious cults whose charismatic leaders, armed with the prophetic message and often with the code to decipher the timeline for the disclosure of the encrypted sealed documents, are fixated on a specific date; December, 21, 2012.
Why would it be any different this time since the doomsday prophets of the past have always been proven wrong by the passing of time. But this time the elements that surround the Revelation warnings are all fitting into place, or so it seems. There are definitely wars, and rumours of war. A quantum power leap in computer data processing and memory storage is making it possible for a select group to mass police the entire world. This may be the mark of the beast. The world is being stressed by factors beyond human control such has massive earthquakes, solar flare activity, and other such cataclysmic natural cycles of cosmic creative growth. The masses are dying of hunger, the plagues are at the doorstep......
Enough said....stand up and be counted Satan so we can get on with eternity......might be the best scenario.
The Bible is a great sacred book. I don't know that there is a physical Hades, Hell, Lake of Fire, or Eternal Pit.
I don't know that there is a physical Heaven, or, as some rapture prophets and interpreters of doomsday prophecy would have you believe, that some good people will be magically lifted into this Heaven if they are righteous enough.
Here's how i see it (today). Ask me again tomorrow.
Genesis is the Alpha, and Revelation is the Omega. No one knows the time, except the creator himself, not the prophets of old or the modern interpreters of prophecy, not the false prophets. But the day will come for it is the creative force of that is law and not the will of humans or of biological creations.
Genesis describes people who lived 200 to 1000 years. This is myth of course and most modern rational people look at this as metaphor. Again in Genesis there is mention of visitors from the heavens: The Nephilim. 
The biological human, has been moving the myth along through the ages, from one generation to the next since the days of Alpha.
Now we learn that those who are righteous in the eyes of the book of life (probably some metaphysical database on the Nephilims alien ship) will overcome the calamities of the pit of Hades and rapture into a new world where they will live for 1000 years in the Heavens and in a Kingdom that will be like Heaven on Earth.
It's all so easy. It's like comparing apples to apples. These fools who tell you to give them your wallet while they process your claim to heaven are telling you that you will somehow be magically swept away (along with them of course) to heaven where you will live for 1000 years in a kingdom that is heaven on earth.
Think about that one for a second. Why would you sell your soul for a chance at 1000 years when the universe itself is billions of years old. Those don't sound like good odds to me. Even recent human history as records going back 50000 years. Seem like anyone buying that lottery ticket is giving up a really big pot to the King of Hades and taking a very small pot as a margin of profit.
The truth according to me (today).
My understanding of rapture is that the Nephilim, who still live 200 to 1000 years or more, are about to come back through a stargate and take back with them about 144000 people righteous humans. There's probably no need for capitalism in their realm. Usurpers wouldn't survive if everyone was able to earn 10 % on their investment for more than 100 years.
When will this happen?
Don't go thinking Hale Bopp just yet. They don't take dead beats.
Who knows when this will happen but if i had to guess it would be sometime during the galactic alignment. During this cosmic period the stargate will open and make intergalactic space travel possible.
These angelic heavenly overlords will use the healing power of caduceus and asclepius to heal the sickness of these elects who will go on to live 200 to 1000 years in the kingdom of god forever and ever, generation after generation after generation.
Of course once they get there they may surprised to discover that there are higher worlds for the righteous yet, where eternal life is possible.
